Properties and application-SS 309S Sheet

Stainless Steel 309S Sheets

What is Grade 309?

Stainless steels are high-alloy steels with enhanced corrosion resistance, largely due to chromium content ranging from 4% to 30%. They are classified into martensitic, ferritic, or austenitic types based on their crystalline structure.

Grade 309 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel designed for high-temperature applications. It offers excellent resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and scaling at temperatures up to 2000°F. At elevated temperatures, its strength is comparable to standard 18-8 stainless steels, making it ideal for furnace components, heat exchangers, and other high-heat environments.

What is the difference between Stainless Steel Grade 309 and 309S?

Grade 309S is the low-carbon variant of 309 stainless steel. While both are austenitic chromium-nickel alloys with high-temperature resistance, the key difference lies in carbon content:

  • 309: Standard carbon content; suitable for general high-temperature applications.

  • 309S: Reduced carbon content; minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, improving weldability and resistance to sensitization.

Both grades maintain excellent tensile strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, but 309S is preferred when welding or exposure to high-temperature gases may cause corrosion.

What is Stainless Steel Grade 309S Sheet?

Stainless Steel 309S Sheets are made from low-carbon 309 stainless steel, offering superior forming and welding capabilities. These sheets are suitable for high-temperature environments where sensitization could lead to corrosion.

They can be conveniently welded using resistance and fusion methods, making them highly versatile for industrial applications.
